The Federal budget universe in visual form

Here's an interesting and well-executed poster showing the relative size of the various parts of the Federal government, based on their budgets. Note the pull down menu on the side that allows you to zoom in on a particular agency.

This is an interesting snapshot of the Federal Budget. In a visual world sometimes we need pictures to capture our attention. In this case, the wandering eye might eventually lead to the top right corner of the poster and experience a brief moment of clarity as the image refocuses on the NIH allocation.

Despite a call for meeting the historic NIH budget growth of 8%, a near flat allocation is now likely for the 4th consecutive year following the NIH doubling of 1998 to 2003. With the 21st century dubbed as the "life sciences century", this is difficult to accept.
